Synopsis

Two years in the making, Juan and Maria Balboa have translated Homer's  classic, the Iliad.

Interlinear English and Greek, with the Greek word order rearranged to match the English, as an assistance to the reader.

With Introduction by Juan Balboa and Prologue by Pierre Grimes, Phd.

In their translation, the Balboas give special focus to the translation of the appearances of 'αυτο' ('Self').

Published in two volumes: Volume 1 contains books 1-12. Volume 2  contains books 13-24.

Notes from the Translators

1. Homer and Heraclitus

Homer : Heraclitus : : Grandfather : Father

On the one hand , it is variously said that Homer is dated sometime between the 12th and 8th century BC and that he lived somewhere in Asia Minor , or as the Hellenes called It , Ionia . On the other hand , Heraclitus is reported to have originated from the same Ionian region , but at least 300 (but probably many more) years after Homer . Furthermore on the one hand , the word Logos is not to be found at all in all of Homer’s Iliad , neither is the word Ousia. Whereas on the other hand , the word Epos is used by Homer extensively throughout The Iliad , especially when introducing the speeches of the main characters ; as when Homer says ‘X Spoke with Winged/Feathered Epos .’

Then , after much time had passed , Heraclitus no longer used the word Epos , but instead he used the word Logos to describe the Self-Same Divine , Intellectual Function that expresses the unfolding that takes place when one speaks the cognitions of their mind ; from the most basic and conjectural ones , to the most Sublime and Truthful Ones.

Take notice that the “Homeric Dictionary” has no references for any word that deals with either Logos or Ousia , whereas it does use the word for Self .

Therefore , it appears to me that Heraclitus , just as Pythagoras , who was a contemporary of Heraclitus , and were both Philosophers and not Poets , both introduced The Idea of Logos to our western world .

Furthermore , I see nothing to prevent me from using Logos instead of Word , since the former is indeed more akin to Epos than the latter.
